Sister Jane Gerety has had many roles in the world of education. She began by teaching high school students and eventually became a professor and academic dean at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While there, she created a baccalaureate program for poor women in the Pittsburgh Hill District. In 2009, Sr. Jane was inaugurated as the seventh president of Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.

Prior to becoming president of the university, Sr. Jane was senior vice president for sponsorship and the corporate compliance officer at Saint Joseph’s Hospital Health System in Atlanta, Georgia. She was able to help Saint Joseph’s become one of the first hospitals to establish a Center for Ethics in Health Care.

In addition to serving as president of Salve Regina, Sr. Jane serves on several non-profit boards and is the chair of several organizations including St. John’s Mercy Hospital, Mercy Housing Southeast, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and more.

Sr. Jane is very proud of her Irish roots. Her mother’s family emigrated from County Mayo and her father’s family came from County Meath. Her order, the Religious Sisters of Mercy, was founded by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831.
