George Terry
After the success of his Oscar-nominated screenplay for In the Name of the Father, Terry George is once more in the spotlight, this time for his directorial debut in Some Mother’s Son.
George was born in Belfast, and he began his career in journalism when he moved to the U.S. He first worked as a fact checker at New York magazine, then as a researcher for several prominent writers including Pete Hamill, Peter Maas and Shana Alexander. He also wrote a weekly music column for the Irish Voice.
George’s two-act drama The Tunnel was produced at the Irish Arts Center in New York. Jim Sheridan directed and starred in the play during its successful six-month run.
After Sheridan returned to Ireland to direct My Left Foot, George continued at the Center, producing plays, art exhibitions, readings and concerts. Throughout the late 1980s he continued his magazine and television work, writing for such publications as the New York Daily News, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Elle, Travel, Holiday and our own Irish America. He was also a contributor to a number of syndicated television programs.
