It’s been a great year for Derek Jeter, winning a World Series ring in his superb rookie year with the Yankees, being named Rookie of the Year, guest starring on Seinfeld and the Late Show with David Letterman, not to mention being dubbed the most eligible bachelor in New York since JFK, Jr.
Contract purchased in May 1995, 22-year-old Jeter is now one of the most popular Yankees. During the 1995 season he made 13 starts and batted .234 with 3 doubles and 6 RBIs.
Jeter was named Minor League Player of the Year, Florida State League Most Valuable Player and Player of the Month, and Topps Eastern League Player of the Month all in the same year, 1994.
The son of an Irish mother and a black father, Jeter attributes his success to lie fact that he has his priorities straight and knows what he wants to do with his life. His peak fort in the 1996 season, hitting .314 with 10 homers and 78 runs batted in while fielding skillfully with 22 errors in 157 games, is what makes Jeter such a reliable shortstop for the Yankees.
