Daniel M. Rooney
In his 42 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dan Rooney has emerged as one of the most active executives in the NFL, as well as one of Pittsburgh’s most involved executives in civic affairs. As a central figure in NFL operations over the past 25 years, Rooney’s league functions have included membership on the board of directors for NFL Trust Fund, NFL Films and the Scheduling Committee.
He is currently a member of the six-person Management Council Executive Committee, the Hall of Fame Committee, the NFL Properties Executive Committee, the Player/Club Operations Committee and the NFL Stadium Committee.
Rooney was appointed president of the Steelers in 1975, and has a reputation for having developed and molded a model professional sports franchise with a low-key approach and delegation of responsibilities to his staff.
He will also be strongly involved in this summer’s return of American football to Croke Park. The Steelers will play the Chicago Bears in an NFL pre-season game on July 27.
Rooney currently serves on the board of the United Way, and is also a board member of the American Diabetes Association, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the American Ireland Fund. He is married to Patricia, and they have nine children.
