Film Screening and Discussion: “Frederick Douglass and the White Negro” at the Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center
The Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center is proud to present a special screening of the acclaimed documentary film “Frederick Douglass and the White Negro” on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. This compelling film, directed by John J. Doherty, explores the fascinating and complex relationship between Frederick Douglass, the renowned African American abolitionist, and the Irish people during the 19th century.
“Frederick Douglass and the White Negro” delves into Douglass’s escape from slavery and his subsequent journey to Ireland, where he found unexpected allies in his fight for freedom and equality. The film highlights the shared struggles and solidarity between the Irish and African American communities, offering a unique perspective on the transatlantic fight against oppression.
Following the screening, a discussion will be led by Dr. Joseph Lennon, of the Center for Irish Studies at Villanova University and Denise Burgher Director, Community and Curricular Engagement, The Center for Black Digital Research, PhD Candidate from the University of Delaware. This engaging conversation will delve into the themes of the film and the historical context of Douglass’s life and work.
Attendees are encouraged to participate in the discussion and share their insights. Donations will be accepted at the door to support future cultural and educational events at the center.
