Jessie Stapleton has admitted she does not know anything about the future of Irish women’s boss Eileen Gleeson but said she would like her to stay on in the role if it were up to her.
This week, Ireland lost 2-1 to Wales in Dublin in their second-leg playoff game. The result means they will now not be heading to Switzerland, raising questions about the manager and older players.
Gleeson, who replaced Vera Pauw after the World Cup, was asked after the game if she might return to her former role as Head of Women and Girls’ Football at the FAI following the defeat.
“I’m not thinking about that tonight; we have a team that is devastated at the fact that they are not going to the Euros,” said Gleeson on Tuesday to the Irish Times.
Speculation will likely increase over the coming weeks and months before Ireland’s next game in spring.
Stapleton was asked about the possibility of Gleeson staying or leaving this week and revealed she had no insider knowledge but would support her if she decided to remain in the role.
“I don’t know anything about that. Eilo is the gaffer for now, and she’s got us to where we are, and I think she’s been incredible,” said the 19-year-old to RTE Sport.
“She put a lot of trust in me, and I feel like I’ve developed a lot under her.
“I’d love to see her stay in the role, and I don’t think one result should define her. We’ve come a long way as a team under Eilo. I’d back her as a manager.”
Players like Katie McCabe and Denise O’Sullivan’s futures with the national team are sure to come under scrutiny as well. Stapleton also hopes the older players stay on to help the younger members of the squad in future games.
“It’s their decision; I think they’re all capable of continuing. Some of them are fitter than some of us coming in. It’s up to them.
“They’re all amazing players; their experience is invaluable, and all the younger girls are learning from them every camp we come into. So, I hope they stick around; it would be amazing for the country and the team.”
Ireland next plays Turkey on February 21 in the Nations League.
