October 16 was declared Ronan Tynan Day in New York City, and the Irish tenor was presented with a mayoral proclamation by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, pictured right. The ceremony, which took place at the FDNY headquarters, followed Tynan’s moving performance at the 89th FDNY Memorial Day Service that honored the memory of 352 members of the Department killed in the line of duty since October, 2000.
Tynan sang at a number of FDNY funerals and memorial services, including those killed on September 11 and in the Father’s Day fire of 2001, and has been instrumental in helping families of FDNY during their time of need. Members of Tynan’s family traveled from Ireland to attend the ceremony. ♦
